Gambit
Real Name: Remy
Lebeau
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 175
lbs
Eyes: Red
Hair: Brown
Mutant Powers:
Gambit has the ability to convert the potential energy of inanimate
objects into kinetic energy. This kinetic energy is released on impact
with explosive force. Remy's favoured use of this power is "charged"
playing cards which he then throws at his target.
It is also believed
that Gambit has enhanced agility due to his mutation. Remy is often
described as being "very charismatic", although it is unknown if this is
also a mutant power.
First Appearance:
Uncanny X-Men #266
History:
Remy began life as a homeless boy, until he was adopted by Jean-Luc
LeBeau, head of the New Orleans Thieves Guild. As part of a peace
treaty between the Thieves and the Assassins Guild, Remy and Bella Donna
Boudreaux (granddaughter of the head of the Assassins) were arranged to
be married. Bella Donna's brother, Julien, strongly opposed the marriage,
and challenged Remy to a duel. In the battle that ensued, Remy severely
injured Julien, and was forced to flee New Orleans to prevent a war between
the two guilds.
Gambit wandered the world, plying his skills as a master thief. At
one time, he was hired by Mr Sinister to assemble a group of mutant assassins
known as the Marauders. He then led the Marauders into the Morlock
tunnels where the Marauders began slaughtering them, although Gambit was
unaware of their plans.
Gambit came across
the X-Man Storm while she had been transformed into a child, lost her memory
and turned to thievery. Gambit helped her escape the Shadow King,
and the two quickly became partners. Later, when Professor X returned
from outer space, and Storm had been returned to her true form, she supported
Gambit's admittance to the X-Men. Here Remy fell in love with fellow
X-Man Rogue, although recently the two have grown apart, and his wife Bella
Donna became his enemy.
Recently the
rest of the X-Men learned of Remy's part in the Morlock Massacre, and left
him in Antarctica. Since then he has returned to the team, although
it has not yet been revealed how he survived the freezing conditions.
Here he found Marrow, who was one of the few Morlock's to survive the Morlock
Massacre only because she was saved by Remy, who feels he owes a debt to
her.
Gambit now leads
one team of the X-Men, although they do not completely trust him.
He has also taken on the leadership of the Theive's Guild.
In the future
where Bishop was born, Gambit has become an aged man who witnessed the
betrayal of the X-Men by one of their own. Bishop suspected Gambit
was the traitor until he learned of the origin of Onslaught.
